Infinity symbol with moon and script
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on an arm shows an infinity symbol formed from a dotted line of small stars. Script lettering reads I love you to the moon and back along the loop, and a crescent moon sits at the right-hand end. The linework is fine and solid black with no shading, and the design is shown against a zebra print fabric.

The mate of the Mary Ellen had been counting the stars for eleven nights before he thought to ask the cook what the girl was drawing with chalk. Ruth Pellow, who had sailed with her father since she was six and was now nine, had sketched a lying-down figure of eight on the galley slate and dotted it with small stars where the lamplight caught the chalk.

"That's the sea, that's the way home," she said, not looking up. "Father says you can go round it forever and never fall off the end."
The mate asked where her father was. She tapped the slate with the chalk stub and said he was on the far side of the loop, waiting, and that the moon sat at the turn so he could find his way. Nobody aboard had the heart to tell her the Mary Ellen had put a Pellow over the side off the Horn two winters back. The cook gave her an extra biscuit and a dry rag for the moon, which she kept drawing thinner each night, until it was only a curl of white at the right-hand end of the loop.
When the ship raised the Tyne at last, Ruth went ashore first with the slate under her arm. The men swore afterwards that they had rubbed the chalk clean, yet the loop was still there in the wet, dotted and crescented, with words running along it in her round hand: to the moon and back. The mate never learned whether she found her father. He knew only that nobody wiped that slate again, and that the galley lamp still falls on it at night.
