Infinity symbol with paw prints on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol sits on the top of a foot, with a paw print containing a heart in the left loop and a plain paw print in the right loop. A small outlined circle sits where the two loops cross. The linework is bold and solid, filled in black ink with no shading, and the tattoo is centred on the foot against a dark, ribbed mat with pink toenail polish visible above it.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the gull that's eyeing your chips. No, Davey, I'm not telling the mackerel tale again. This one's about the dog.

Her name was Mab, a black and white collie with one ear that wouldn't stand up. Every evening for eleven winters she walked the harbour wall to the iron ring at the end, where the mooring chain came up green out of the water. Her master, Ioan Pryce, skippered the Gannet out of Skerrow, and the Gannet never came in on time. Mab didn't care about weather. She sat on the ring, tail sweeping the granite, and watched the bar for a grey hull.
Ioan went out one October night when the glass was dropping like a stone down a well. The Gannet came in two days later with her wheelhouse stove and nobody aboard but the cat. Mab sat on the ring anyway. The harbourmaster tried to coax her home with a pie. She ate the pie and stayed put, and when the tide turned she lay with her chin on the cold iron, paw prints pressed in the wet at her feet, each one filling and emptying with the water.
By spring the young lads had named it the Mab Loop, because she walked that wall in a figure of eight, out along the ring and back, never once cutting across her own track. Folk said she was waiting for Ioan. I say she was keeping the path open.
So when you go out tomorrow, Davey, and the sea gets lumpy, look for the place where the loops cross. That's where the bar is shallowest. Go round it slow, and you'll come back.
