Infinity symbol with initials and heart
Lettering · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo shows a black infinity loop with two cursive initials, an A and an R, woven through its centre. A small solid red heart sits between the letters. The linework is clean and even, with the black ink used for the outline and lettering and the red used only for the heart, against plain skin with soft lighting.

The pencil drawing had been folded so many times that the loop split along one crease, and Eli Rennick smoothed it flat on the galley table as though it might argue. Hollis, the cook, watched him over a pan of scorched porridge. "Dunning's hand," he said. "Sixpence a letter in Hull, and he charged extra for the heart."

"Red's dearer," Eli said. "Ada said it had to be red or she'd not have it at all." He had sat in Dunning's back room with the needle humming and the Humber slapping the pilings outside, and had not flinched once, which Dunning claimed was rarer than an honest tallyman. The letters had come out neat, the A leaning into the R like two people sharing an umbrella. Eli had been pleased with that, and had said so, and Ada had laughed at him for it in the last hour before the tide.
Eleven weeks south, the Sable Star raised the coast above Valparaíso and the mail launch came alongside with sacks of Hull post. There was one letter for Rennick, thin, in Ada's sloping hand. He read it on the hatch cover with the sun hot on his neck. It said the shop had moved, that her mother was poorly, and that she had written his initials inside the bread tin so she would not forget how to spell them. Nothing else.
He folded the chart back into his oilskin and took the stub of pencil from Hollis without being asked. In the margin, under the broken loop, he wrote the date and the name of the port, then a second line for the next letter, and left it blank so there would be room to fill.
