Infinity symbol with script name placeholder

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single continuous black line forms an infinity symbol that loops across the frame. The words Your and Name are written in a cursive script, one on each side of the crossing point, with the lettering sitting close to the curves. The design is drawn in solid black on a plain white background with no shading or extra colour.

Dear Marta,

The 6.12 came through the crossing again this morning, the same as every day, out along the north loop and back over the points at the signal box, so that for a moment the engine is passing its own tail. Mr Oduya in the box lifts his cap at it. I waved too, from the platform bench where I wait for the customs man to stamp my forms, which he has not done since August.

I have been filling the forms in for him. Border paper is simple if you copy the boxes exactly: name, date of birth, purpose of crossing. The box for name is where I stop. The clerk at the window gave me a pad of carbon copies and said to write whatever I liked, since nobody checks names on a loop line. The trains only ever arrive where they began. I asked him what happens to the passengers. He said they keep going round until they remember which carriage they boarded.

Yesterday a boy of about nine sat opposite me with a ticket that said only YOUR, the rest smudged away. He was not worried. He traced the track on the window with one finger, round and over and round, and said it looked like a sleeping number eight. I thought of you, and the summer we tried to walk the whole circuit of the lake and gave up at the old iron bridge.

The 6.12 is due again at noon. I have decided to get off at the junction this time, stand where the two lines cross, and write my name in the space between the rails with the chalk Mr Oduya uses for his timetable. If the next train comes through and I am still standing there, you will know which carriage I chose.
