Infinity symbol with sisters script in two colours

Fine line · Colour · Photo

Two stacked photographs show the same infinity symbol tattoo with the word sisters written across its centre in cursive script. The top panel uses blue and teal ink, and the bottom panel uses pink and red, with small curls at each end of the symbol. The linework is thin and clean, with soft colour fill and a plain background of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ticket office at Harrowgate Junction had one window and one clock, and the clock ran four minutes fast so that nobody ever missed a train by reason of the clock. Old Mrs Pell kept the window. Every Thursday two women came in from opposite sides of the line, one from the north platform and one from the south, and each bought a single to the other's town, and each went away with the change in a folded paper twist.

Nobody asked why. The clerks had given up asking. They only noticed that the two women never once arrived on the same train, and never once left on the same one, and that the pair of them had the same way of tapping the counter twice before they spoke.

One February the north train was cancelled for snow. The younger woman stood at the window with her case and the old clerk counted the change out slowly, because she had heard the story of the loop line that ran between the two platforms under the bridge. It was said a loop of track carried a traveller round and back to where she began, provided she did not look at the clock. The younger woman looked at it anyway, and it said four minutes past, and the south train was already in.

They met on the bridge, halfway over the rails, where the wind came up through the grating. Neither had ever stood still long enough to see the other's face. They looked, and then laughed, and then went down the same stairs together, and the clerk, watching from the window, saw two women walking out of one door as if the platform had only ever had one side.
