Infinity symbol with 'to infinity and beyond' script
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The collage shows a black infinity symbol drawn in a thin, even outline, with the words 'to' and 'infinity' on the top image and 'and' and 'beyond' on the bottom. The script lettering is fine and cursive, set along the curves and crossing point of the loop. The tattoo is in black ink only against a plain skin background, with the two photos stacked one above the other.

The rope had come off the drum with a twist in it, and Hal Trewin was not going to let the foreman see him swear over it. He knelt on the wet cobbles of Porthgwidden quay and worked the strands apart with his thumbs, feeling for the lay the way his grandfather had taught him, one hand over the other until the hemp began to hum under his palms.

Mrs Oake was waiting at the chandlery door when he came up the hill with the coil over his shoulder. She had a sheet of brown paper folded in four, and when she opened it there was a loop drawn in pencil, lying on its side like a lazy figure eight with no beginning and no end. Her Tom had sailed out of this harbour on the Morwenna in March and had not come back. She wanted a mooring line spliced into that shape, she said, so that nothing she tied to it could ever part from it. Hal told her that the sea did not read promises, and she told him she had not asked it to.
He spent two evenings at it under the lamp in the loft. He laid the eye, took the first tuck, then the second, and found that the crossing point needed the strands to pass over and under each other in a way that refused to sit square until he stopped counting and simply let his fingers remember. On the third morning the splice was done. He ran the whole length through his hands, and wherever he tried to find the join he could not feel one, only the place where two curves crossed and kept on going.
She paid him in tea and a slab of saffron cake, and she tied the line to the post by the door without looking at it. Hal walked back down to the quay with the empty coil under his arm and watched the boats lift on the tide, all of them turning on their mooring lines in the same slow loop.
