Interlocking hearts on two fingers
Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown with a matching black tattoo on a finger of each hand, each a heart shape formed by interlocking, outlined lines. The ink is solid black with clean edges and no visible colour, set against dark fabric and a blurred background. The tattoos are small and centred on their fingers, with the hands angled toward the camera.

The lock at Hebble Cut had been built for two men pushing from opposite banks, and by the time Nell Harrow took it on the men were long gone and the gates had gone stiff. She learned the trick from old Tom Ashby, who said the beams only sealed when both sides leaned in at the same moment. Otherwise the water simply laughed at you and kept running downhill.

The first winter she worked alone, a boatman called Eli Crane came through with a narrowboat full of coal and a dog that would not stop barking. He wanted through before dark. She told him the far gate needed someone on the other bank. He laughed, then went round by the weir path in the sleet to take the other beam, and she heard him swearing in the reeds. When the gates met, the water settled with a sound like a long breath let out.
Afterwards he came back over the footbridge with his hands black from the windlass and asked whether she always worked the lock by herself. She said she had a partner for the summer months. He asked where. She pointed at the keeper's cottage, where two iron rings hung on the door, hooked together the way the links of a gate chain are hooked, and said the one who forged them had known better than to pull alone.
Eli studied the rings for a long while. In the morning two sets of boot prints ran either side of the towpath, and the gates at Hebble Cut stood open to the grey sky.
