Shaded pumpkin with vines on a wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded pumpkin sits at the centre of the design, with its ribbed body given soft grey gradients and a small curled stem on top. Fine outlines trace curling vines and small leaves that extend out to either side of the pumpkin. The tattoo is in black and grey only and sits in the middle of a plain, lightly lit section of skin against a white textured cloth.

The pumpkin had been sulking since Tuesday, and Walter Dunn blamed the rain, though the rain had fallen on the whole row of allotments and only his squash had gone soft at the stem. He crouched by the bed with a flask of cold tea, lifting the leaves one at a time as if checking on a sleeping child. The vines had run off the bed and across the path, curling round the water butt and up the handle of the wheelbarrow, as though they were looking for somewhere better to be.

His granddaughter Priya arrived with a cardboard box and a question about the village show. "Entry closes at six," she said. "You need a pumpkin that isn't lying down." Walter grunted. He had grown the same variety for thirty years, a dull orange ribbed thing his late wife called the bruiser, and every autumn it sat on the trestle table at the Methodist hall beside the marrows and the damson jam, looking as if it had been dropped there from a height.
Together they propped the fruit on an upturned bucket and tied the runaway vines to a bamboo cane with strips of an old pillowcase. Walter fussed over one small curl of stem until Priya took the scissors from him. "Leave it," she said. "It's the bit that makes it look like it's trying."
At six they carried it in. The judge, a retired vicar with a magnifying loupe, turned it over slowly, pressed his thumb into the grey-green skin and said nothing for a long moment. Then he wrote a card and set it down. The card said Best in Show, Most Determined. Walter laughed until he had to sit on the stage steps. "Determined," he said, wiping his eyes. "That's the word for it."
