Matching pinky promise hands over an orange sun
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two near-identical tattoos show a pair of hands with little fingers hooked together, set in front of a solid orange circle and finished with blue cuffs. The linework is bold and black with flat, solid fills and light shading on the hands. The colour is limited to orange, blue and skin tones, and the two tattoos sit side by side in a matching pair on separate arms.

Dear Nadia, the ovens are on and the flour has got into everything, including the crease of my elbow where the cuff of my shirt rubs. Mr Okafor wants the first batch out before the window goes grey, so I am writing this on the back of a delivery docket between trays. You will laugh that I still have the docket from your last shift.

Remember the promise we made on the loading bay that January, hooking our little fingers over a sack of strong white like we were five? You said the sun would come up orange over the bins if we both kept it, and I said that was the sort of thing people say to sell bread. Yesterday I stood out back at quarter past five and it did exactly that, a flat orange disc behind the car park lamps, and I thought of you tearing the wrapping off a cold sausage roll somewhere two hundred miles north.
The cuffs on my blue work jacket are still turned back the way you showed me, so the dough does not climb my wrist. I have kept the tin of seed cake you left on the shelf, though I am not sure it is still food. Mr Okafor says it is a historical document now and I am not to touch it.
I will be on the early bus on the first Saturday of March. Keep your little finger ready.
Yours, Pip
