Jeep grille tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black tattoo of a Jeep grille, with two round headlight shapes and seven vertical slats, sits on the arm of a person who is flexing. A blue Jeep Wrangler is parked in the background on a road, with green trees and hills behind it. The tattoo is a flat black silhouette with no shading, set against pale skin in a bright outdoor setting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys had been coaxing the Wrangler since six, and all it gave back was a dry click, like a bead dropped in a chapel. Rain came sideways off the slate hills and ran in threads along the yard fence. Her father's old Jeep sat with its bonnet up, blue under forty years of dust, looking like a man who had been told to wait outside.

By seven she had the grille off and lying face up on the workbench under the strip light. Seven vertical slats, two round lamp rims, the black plastic chipped at one corner where a gatepost had once got the better of it. Her father used to say you could tell a Jeep by its face. It was the only part of the car that looked straight at the road, and it never once apologised for anything it had done to get there.

Near midnight a Land Rover pulled into the yard with a flat tyre and a family asleep in the back, and she spent an hour on their wheel with the radio low. When she came back the rain had stopped. She tried the Jeep again, cleaned the earth terminal with a wire brush, and it caught on the third turn, rough and sudden, the way it always had when he was in the passenger seat talking nonsense.

She did not refit the grille. She propped it on the passenger seat, slats facing the windscreen, buckled the belt across it, and drove up the pass with the window down. At the top the sky was going the colour of weak tea, and the car looked out over the valley as if it had only ever wanted the view.
