Neo-trad · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with pin-curled hair kisses a skeleton wearing a dark suit and flower buttonhole, set within an ornate scrolled cartouche. A heart-shaped keyhole sits at the base of the design. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth black and grey, with white highlights on the scrolls and skin.

Dear Walter,

The boat didn't come again, so Mrs Gillies has the post sack and I have this pencil stub and the last of the good paper. The fog sat on Skerrie for nine days. You always said the island smelt of wet rope and sorrow, and I told you that was only the kelp, and you kissed me to make me stop arguing.

Your mother's lock box came over with the coal ship in March. I haven't opened it. I know what's inside because you showed me the night before you left: the brass key cut in Lerwick and the little tin heart with the hole in its front. You said a heart with a keyhole was no use unless someone on the other side held the key.

Last Tuesday the fog lifted all at once and the whole sky went white. I stood on the rocks at the north end in my good hat and thought, Walter Ferrier, you are a fool, and laughed out loud at nobody. The gulls didn't mind.

I'm posting the key with this, registered, so you'll know it's safe. Don't open the tin until you're home. I'll be on the quay on the first boat that doesn't turn back, and you can tell me what the mainland did to your nerve. Yours until the tide turns, Nell.
