Kitten peeking out of a pizza slice

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A grey tabby kitten with large green eyes and a small pink nose peers out from beneath a slice of pepperoni pizza, with its striped tail curling down to the left. The kitten is drawn with soft shaded fur and bold dark outlines, while the pizza crust, cheese, pepperoni and mushrooms are filled with warm yellows, reds and greens. The design sits on smooth, pale skin against a plain background.

The guard at Lenko had searched forty lorries that week and found nothing but damp cabbages, so when Ilse Marran set a pizza box on the inspection table he did not bother to lift the lid. He lifted the slice instead. Beneath it sat a grey tabby kitten with enormous green eyes, pressed flat against the cardboard as though it had been told to be a loaf.

"Tell me that's dinner," said the guard.

"It's dinner for my brother," Ilse said. "He has been waiting since Tuesday."

The kitten belonged to nobody. A baker in Oszek had fed it crust crumbs behind his ovens until he wanted it gone, and Ilse had agreed to carry it across the river, where a vet with a cousin in the town would find it a home. She had been careful with it all morning. Now it sat blinking at the guard, its small pink nose twitching at the smell of salami.

The guard looked at the kitten, then at the queue of lorries stretching back to the bridge, then at the kitten again. He sighed and slid the slice back into place, so that only its striped tail showed at the bottom edge of the box as Ilse lifted it.

"Pepperoni," he said. "Declare it."

"Pepperoni," Ilse agreed, and walked out into the sun carrying the best-hidden cat in the district.
