Cat-faced matryoshka doll holding a yarn ball

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cat-faced matryoshka doll with large eyes, a small teal heart on its forehead and a round gold bell on a teal collar fills the frame. The purple doll body has pale patterned details, and it cradles a large pink yarn ball with visible wrapped texture. Bold black outlines and smooth colour fills give a clean, illustrative finish against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bell on the smallest doll had gone quiet again, so Maud climbed onto the stool and lifted the lid of the bottom drawer, where the nesting dolls lived in a row like sleeping hens. Seven of them, each one smaller than the last, each one painted with the same striped cat face and the same teal ribbon at the throat. The eighth was no bigger than a thimble and had lost its bell years ago, so when Maud pressed her ear to the wood she heard only the house settling.

Her grandfather had turned them from sycamore in a shed behind the mill at Hebden Bridge, and he had painted them purple because purple was the only colour left in the tin after he'd done the chapel doors. He said a cat was the only creature that would sit still for a nesting doll, because a cat already knew how to keep one secret folded inside another. Maud had never asked him what the secret was. She had been too busy unwinding the wool he kept in a basket by the range.

The yarn had come from the dyers on the next street, pink as a boiled sweet and wound tight as a fist. Maud took the loose end and followed it out of the back door, across the wet yard, under the washing line and through the gap in the hedge where the rain had pooled in a puddle shaped like a heart. It ran on into the wood. She could feel the pull of it in her wrist, like a fish on a line.

At the far end she found the old bell hanging from a low branch, and beneath it, curled among the roots, the eighth doll, sitting on the pink ball with its paws folded neatly over its knees. It was not lost. It had only been waiting for someone to follow the thread all the way. Maud lifted it, and the bell at its throat rang once, bright and small, and she laughed out loud in the trees.
