Lace-up shoe tattoo across the top of a foot

Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo depicts a shoelace threaded through five pairs of metal eyelets, finished with a blue ribbon bow at the top, and is designed to look like a laced-up shoe. The lace and eyelets are rendered with soft grey shading and highlights that create a raised, three-dimensional effect, while the ribbon is shaded in blue. The bare foot is photographed against a dark background, with the tattoo running from the ankle towards the toes.

Gran kept the eyelets in a tobacco tin, brass rings sorted by size, because she said a boot without them was only a sock with ambitions. I was nine the winter the ferry stopped for eleven days and we ran out of everything except leather and gossip. She taught me to thread a lace the way the fishermen tied knots, over and under, never once looking at my hands.

The bow was her one vanity. Every pair that left the shop got a loop and a tail, tied with blue ribbon cut from the spare length she kept for Sunday hats. Mrs Gillies came in with a shoe split along the seam and asked for it to look as if it had never been mended. Gran pulled the lace through five pairs of eyelets, checked the tension twice, then tied the bow so the ends stood up like ears.

When the ferry came back, Mrs Gillies was gone and the shoes were still on the bench, the ribbon tied tighter than anyone ties a thing they mean to leave. Gran said the lace was for walking away in and the bow was for coming back to. I didn't understand until I had a shop of my own on the mainland, and a customer who wanted her husband's boots laced so they could be kicked off in one go.

I still cut the blue ribbon on Sundays. Every pair I finish, I tie the bow loose enough to pull, the way she showed me, so whoever wears them can undo it with one tug and be off down the road before the kettle boils.
