Laced shoe tattoo across a foot
Realism · Other · Colour · Photo
A bare foot shows a tattoo of a shoelace laced through a column of metal eyelets, running from the top of the foot toward the ankle. The blue laces have soft highlights and shadows, and the eyelets are shaded in grey to appear three-dimensional, with a dark seam line down the centre. The pale skin and dark background keep the focus on the illusion of a laced shoe.

Every eyelet on the Morwenna had a story, Dad used to say, and he could tell you most of them while he laced his boots on the quayside at four in the morning. He crossed the blue cord from the top of the boot down, through each pair of brass rings, pulling every loop snug until the leather sat like a second skin. Mam bought the laces by the gross from the chandler's in Penzance, and she said a man who went to sea in slack laces would come home in a box.

The gale came in off the Longships on the third night of October. We were hauling the last of the long line when the seam on his left boot split down the middle, the stitching gone white with salt. He didn't swear. He knelt on the wet planks, took a length of spare cord from his pocket and bound the split tight, working the blue through each eyelet as if he had all the time in the world. The skipper shouted for him to get below. He finished the knot first.
We came in on the morning tide with the hold full and gulls screaming over the harbour wall. Dad was the first off the boat that morning, and he never once took those boots off in front of us. When they cleared his cottage I found the spare cord still knotted through the top eyelet, a little dark with brine. I have never untied it, and I do not mean to.
