Large angel wings across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person lies face down on a striped sofa, with a large pair of angel wings tattooed across the upper and mid back. The feathers are rendered in fine, layered black and grey shading that gives them depth and a realistic texture. The wings fill most of the frame, with the head resting on a green cushion and the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Sit down before the wasps find you, and mind that windfall, it's bruised already. My grandfather's cousin Edwin kept the bottom orchard at Harrow Lane, the one that runs down to the brook, and every August the blackbirds took half the Bramleys before he could get a ladder under them. He was a patient man, which is why it surprised everyone when he came up the lane one evening with a swift in a fruit crate, its wing bent back like a broken umbrella.

He nursed that bird in the shed through the back end of summer, feeding it fly larvae off a knitting needle. As it moulted, Edwin gathered every feather it dropped and kept them in a shoebox lined with his late wife's blue tissue paper. His daughter Nell was seven that year and had decided she would climb the old Bramley to its very top, where the sun got in, and no amount of telling her otherwise would shift her. So Edwin laid the feathers out on the kitchen table, dabbed each one with beeswax, and stitched them to two lengths of willow cane and a strip of his oilcloth coat. It was a pair of wings, roughly, and she wore them up that tree like a queen going to church.
She did not fly, of course. She came down through the branches with a crack of wood and landed in the long grass with the wings folded under her and not a scratch on her, laughing so hard she hiccupped. The swift was gone by morning, over the brook and away. Edwin never trimmed the top of that Bramley again. The highest apples are still left for the swift, and nobody picks them, which is the only reason there's any fruit left on that tree when you come up the lane in September.
