Laughing cartoon cat on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon cat with pointed ears, mouth wide open in laughter and a tear at its eye, is drawn with dark outlines and filled with pink and red. Three red HA lettering marks sit to its left, with small motion lines around the head. The tattoo is shown up close on the inner upper arm against a blue floral fabric background.

Mrs Tregenza had told every lodger since Easter that the cat did not laugh, that Smudge was a cat and cats had no business with such nonsense, and so when Mr Abernethy knocked his teapot off the hall windowsill for the third morning running, nobody expected the sound that came back up the stairs. It was a high, helpless cackle, the kind a child makes when a sneeze goes wrong, and it came from the grey-eared thing on the bottom step, mouth wide open, a bright tear rolling down one cheek.

Abernethy had spent thirty years keeping ferries from listing and had no patience for animals that mocked him. He set a trap of pilchards in a biscuit tin, waited behind the coat stand, and was ambushed instead by the cat strolling in from the yard with a crab claw in its mouth. It dropped the claw at his slippers, looked up at him, and laughed until it had to sit down. Beyond the glass the sea lay grey and flat, and a gull on the bins watched with the professional interest of a critic.
He tried to be dignified about it. He told Mrs Tregenza the animal was a menace, and she said that was rich coming from a man who had been sulking since Tuesday over a bit of crockery. The cat padded up the stairs ahead of him, stopped on the landing, and chuckled the way a man chuckles over a joke he has told himself. Abernethy found, to his own astonishment, that his mouth had begun to twitch.
By teatime the whole house was laughing: the three honeymooners from room six, the widow who only ever ate toast, even Mrs Tregenza in the scullery with the tap running. Outside, the tide came over the slipway and carried the crab claw away. The cat sat on the garden wall with its tail curled round its paws, pleased with the afternoon, and laughed at the water.
