You will never guess what Trevor's boy had done the week before the wedding. I was in the back of the Anchor doing the sandwiches when he came in pushing his sleeve up like a flag, and there on his forearm was that white cat with the red bow, sat on a pink heart with yellow flowers climbing the side. Across the bottom ran a black scroll with her name on it, in case anyone was in doubt. Mrs Pargeter from the flower shop nearly dropped the trifle.

The man who did it is Frank Doyle, the one with the little shop behind the amusements who used to do sailors' anchors for a shilling before the decimal change. Frank told Trevor the outlines were the hardest part, because if the black wobbles the whole cat looks like it's been left out in the rain. Trevor said it was the bow he wanted most, which I found touching, and Frank said the bow was the easiest part, which I did not.

At the reception the cat was everywhere, on the cake knife, on the napkins, on the back of the bride's chair. Nobody said a word about it. Then old Mr Pargeter stood up for the toast, looked at the boy's arm, and said that a thing you carry for life should at least be cheerful. He raised his glass and we all drank to the cat. Trevor went red to the ears and kept his sleeve pushed up all night.
