Let It Be script on the inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is the words Let It Be written in a delicate, looping cursive script over two lines, with the capital L and B taller than the lowercase letters. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is white, so it shows only as a faint raised pale outline against the light skin tone. The photograph is taken at an angle from above, with the arm filling the lower centre of the frame and a leopard print surface behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Co-operative Hall smelled of wet coats and Brylcreem, and the band had reached the slow numbers when Eddie Marsh leaned across the trestle table and asked me to write something for him. He had no card, he said, and no nerve either. So I tore the blank edge off a raffle ticket and wrote the words he could not manage to Maureen Gray, who was swaying with her cousin under the crepe paper bells.

I looped the L down under the line the way Mother had taught me at the kitchen table, and Eddie read it twice with his lips moving. "That's not mine," he said. "It's the one the wireless keeps playing." "Then it's already out there for her to hear," I told him. "You only have to hand it over."

He folded the ticket into his cuff and set off across the sprung floor, dodging a conga line of aunties and the caretaker with his mop. I watched him stop in front of Maureen. I watched her shake her head, then watched her unfold the paper and read it with the same frown she gave the sums on the raffle board. Eddie went red to the ears. The band struck up a waltz, and she took his arm without a word.

I went back to ruling columns for the raffle, my pencil worn down to a stub, and wrote the next name on the list without looking up.
