Let it be script with wave on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on a wooden deck, showing a thin black linework tattoo on the outer ankle and top of the foot. The design is a wavy line that flows into the cursive words let it be, with the wave continuing as a looping stroke. The ink is solid black, and the sunlit trees behind give the photo a soft, natural setting.

Dear Sam,

Your card reached the harbour office on Tuesday, the envelope damp at one corner, so I had to guess at the postmark. Yes, I'll come to the reunion, though I'm not promising the hall will still smell of sausage rolls and floor polish the way it did in 1998.
You want to talk about the sea wall night, the one with the rowing boat and Kerry's brother's torch. I've spent twenty-odd years not talking about it, and I'd rather keep it that way. Mum used to say the tide takes what it's owed and gives back the rest in its own time. I thought she was only making a point about the washing up.
Last month I was clearing Gran's biscuit tin on the hall shelf and found a postcard from Newquay, faded almost to nothing. On the back, in her thin pencil, she'd written let it be, underlined twice, with a little wave curling beneath it like a question mark. I laughed out loud at the kitchen table. Forty years she'd kept that card, and I never once asked her what it meant.
So I'm not bringing up the wall. I'll bring the postcard instead, and if you want to know what it says, you'll have to buy me a drink and let the tide do its work.
Yours, Jo
