Fine line black script reading let it be, joined to a curling wave, on the side of a bare foot above a thin ankle chain, with a wooden deck behind.

Let it be script with wave on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot is raised on a wooden deck, showing a black tattoo on its outer side near the ankle. The tattoo pairs a single flowing wave line with the words let it be in cursive script, which curls around the foot. The ink is crisp and dark against the skin, with a thin silver ankle chain above it, and sunlight and trees blur softly in the background.

Dear Tom, the boat is still on the slipway where Dad left her, and the tide has been at her every morning since the funeral. I went down yesterday with a flask and sat on the hull like a fool, waiting for you to tell me what to do with her. You never answered my last two letters, so I have decided for both of us.

The lettering on the transom is nearly gone. Dad painted it himself the summer you were born, in that wobbly hand he used for the shop sign, and the salt has been eating at the edges ever since. Mrs Gale from the chandlery offered fifty pounds for the planks. I told her no. She looked at me the way she looks at gulls that have stolen her chips.

Here is my plan, and you can scold me for it later. I am taking the boat out on Sunday, on the big spring tide, with the oars you carved in woodwork class. I will row past the breakwater and see whether the curl Dad always drew at the bow still runs out ahead of us. If it does, I will come home and sell nothing. If it doesn't, at least I'll know which way the sea has taken him.

He used to say it whenever the nets fouled or the weather turned: let it be, Bel, the water knows its own business. I never once believed him. Bring your waterproofs if you come, and if you don't, I'll tell the sea you sent your regards.

Love, Bel
