Librarian knuckle lettering
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two clenched fists are shown close to the camera, with the word librarian tattooed in black blackletter lettering across the fingers and knuckles. The letters are sharp and angular with solid black fill and no shading or colour. The plain red background keeps the focus on the lettering, and the image is cropped at the wrists.

The boat comes across on Thursdays when the swell allows, and by the time you have knotted it to the iron ring on Skerra's jetty, the islanders are already waiting with their requests scratched on the backs of tide tables. You learned early that the letters on the list tell you more than the titles do. Mrs Gorrie writes her Ws like sharp little tents. The Harrow boy presses so hard the pencil nearly tears the paper.

Your predecessor, a man with a voice like a shut door, left you one rule, pinned to the wall above the bench: never lend a book you have not read to the last page. So for three winters you read everything in the wooden crate, the damp almanacs, the water-stained psalter, the seed catalogues from a decade nobody remembers, until you knew the island better than the island knew itself. Then in March a fisherman's widow asked for the book with no title, and you realised you had never opened it.
It was bound in black calf with a brass clasp that resisted you for a full minute. Inside, every page was blank except the last, which carried a single line in tight, angular letters: the reader is now responsible for the weather. You read it twice. Then you read it aloud to the empty room, which felt foolish, and then less foolish, because the window had gone grey and the sea had changed its note.
You stamp the card with today's date and hand the book across the counter. The widow tucks it under her coat and walks down to the jetty without a word. From the step you watch the boat shrink toward the mainland, carrying the first book you have ever lent without reading, and the first one you were glad to see go.
