A small light bulb is tattooed on the inner wrist of a raised hand with painted pale pink nails. The bulb is drawn in a thin, even black outline with a simple looped filament inside and a plain base. The tattoo is shown against a textured off-white wall, with a red sleeve visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

Sit yourself by the flour bin and mind the sack, because my knees won't stand a long telling this morning. This was the winter the gas man cut off Pell's bakery on Tanner Street for a debt nobody could remember, and the ovens went cold as church stone. Ada Pell had two trays of dough proving in the back room and nowhere warm to put them, so she took the one bulb that still worked, a plain glass globe on a length of flex, and hung it over the bread like a moon she'd bought off the market.

All night she sat on an upturned crate, feeding the wire a little more power from the cellar meter with a coin, watching the loaves swell under that yellow light. The filament inside ticked and hummed. Ada said it sounded like a kettle thinking. Her brother came round at four with a box of matches and a grievance, saying the bulb would eat the shop's last shilling and the bread would still come out pale. She told him to hold his tongue and count the rises.

By half five the dough had risen higher than any Pell loaf before it, domed and tight, and the little loop of metal inside the glass was glowing like a fish-hook caught in the sun. Her brother said nothing. He took a knife to the first cob loaf and the crumb came apart in threads of steam, and the whole street smelled of it before the lamplighters had finished their rounds.

The bulb went out at six, when the sun came up over the chimney pots. Ada never bought another one. She kept the empty globe on the shelf above the flour, where it still catches the morning.
