Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small light switch sits behind the ear, with ON printed above and OFF below in bold block letters. The switch is drawn with a heavy outline and solid black shading on its raised lever, with lighter grey tones on the faceplate. The image is black and white, with the ear and short hair softly blurred around the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The switch at the bottom of Ferry Steps had been in the wall since before the river wall was built, and the old men of Mendle Cross said it had a temper. Somebody had painted ON above it and OFF below in letters a child could read, so nobody could claim they hadn't been warned. Every dusk Tom Arkwright went down with his lamp and threw it up, and the whole town blinked on along the water.

One November the foreman sent word that the lamps would stay dark through the Sunday, to save coal for the mill. Tom went down anyway. He stood in the brick cupboard with his hand on the cold lever and listened to the town calling for light, and he could not tell whether they were frightened or only annoyed. His sister Nell was among the voices, holding a candle at the top of the steps and asking him what he thought he was doing.

He told her he was looking for the off position. She said there was no such thing, not in Mendle, and that the switch had only ever been a way of saying yes. He thought about that until the tide turned. Then he pushed the lever down, slowly, and the town went black.

The stars came out over the estuary, thick as frost on a gate, and nobody in Mendle Cross said a word.
