Lightsaber finger tattoos in blue and red

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two raised hands show thin, single-line tattoos of lightsabers on the index fingers, with a blue blade on the left hand and a red blade on the right. Each tattoo has a dark hilt drawn in grey and black shading at the base of the finger, and the blades are simple coloured lines. The composition is close and centred, with cut-out lightsaber shapes held beside the fingers against a plain wall and wooden fence.

Ruth had the blue lens in both hands when the relief boat pulled away, and she held it up to the dawn as if it were a blade she had been told not to draw. The Board had sent the red for the channel light and the blue for the reef, and then, because a clerk in London had never seen the Scilly rocks in fog, they had sent nothing to make the two agree.

Her father had kept the log for thirty-one years in a hand that leaned into the wind. In the margin, under a date in March, he had written: 'Red to the north. Blue not warranted. Do not light blue.' Ruth read it twice, then climbed the iron stair with the lens wrapped in a blanket.

The fog came in on the third night, thick enough to swallow the horn's second blast. At ten past two a trawler's engine answered from somewhere west, and the skipper's voice came faint across the water, asking for a light he could not see. Ruth fitted the blue lens over the red lamp and turned the mechanism by hand, and the beam went out through the murk in two colours at once, a cold line laid over a warm one, cutting the grey into a path.

The trawler came in along it, slow and certain, and Ruth kept the lamp turning until the sun was a smear over the mainland. In the log she wrote the warrant that did not exist, then the time, then, beneath her father's note, a single line: 'Blue lit. Ship home.'
