Small curled animal outline on the foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single-line black outline of a curled animal sits on the foot near the ankle. The linework is thin and unshaded, with no fill or colour. The foot rests in a purple suede shoe on a white fur rug, with striped and plain white nail varnish visible on the hand.

Nell Ferrier had counted the wagons twice before the cook shouted for the last of the tea, and the count still came out one short. The dodgems were under their canvas, the ghost train was wheeled behind the tent, and the old dog that had once walked the high wire was nowhere she could find. She found him at the edge of the field, where the grass ran into the hedge and the lights of the fair could not reach. He was curled in a tight round the way a cat curls before rain, nose tucked under his tail, so small against the wet ground that she nearly stepped on him. He did not get up. His ribs lifted and fell, slow and steady. Nell sat down in the mud in her good shoes and laid her hand flat on his side, and for a while neither of them said anything at all.
Then the generator coughed, the carousel started its tinny waltz, and a few stars came out over the caravans. Nell understood that he had not wandered off to die. He had come out to find the one place on the whole field where nobody would ask him to jump through anything. She left her coat over him and walked back towards the lights alone.
The next morning her father found her on the steps of the big top, drawing a small curled shape in biro on the back of her hand, over and over, until it looked like a comma with ears. "Pepper's gone," he said. "I know," she said, and blew the ink dry.
