A row of black elephant silhouettes walks across the top of a foot, with the largest elephant at the right and smaller ones trailing to the left. Old Mairead kept the gate of Carrowmore Castle after the last lord died owing everyone money, and she was the one who saw the elephants come up the valley road on a wet spring morning. There were seven of them, the great one at the back, and they walked the way people walk after a long funeral, slowly and without looking at the walls.

The village said the elephants had come from the sea, carried in a merchant's ship that broke on the rocks below the headland, and that the animals had swum ashore and never gone back. Nobody believed it until the youngest of them, a calf no higher than a barrel, stopped at the broken arch and would not move. Its mother turned around. She did not call out. She simply curled her trunk around the calf's tail and waited until it followed.

Mairead had lived inside those walls with nothing but damp and a bell that no longer rang. She had a sack of barley and a grudge against the steward. So she opened the gate wider and let them through the yard, where the nettles had grown up between the cobbles and the chapel roof had given way to sky.

The elephants went down the far side of the hill that evening, nose to tail, the largest always at the rear to keep watch over the rest. When the last of them was a dark line against the heather, Mairead locked the gate for the first time in forty years, and found she had nothing left to lock it against.
