Lion outline and script quote on foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A foot resting on a carpet shows a small black outline of a lion beside the script words "Remember who you are" running across the top of the foot. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is black. The photograph is taken from above at a slight angle, with the foot filling most of the frame and the ankle and anklet visible at the top left.

Ward Six was quiet after two, when the monitors had settled into their small bleeps and the corridor floor shone under the night lights. Tomasz, who pushed the linen trolley and knew every child's name, sat on the step by the sluice and told them about the lion cub who lived on the high rock above the river.

The cub was called Ansel, and he was the proudest creature in the grass. He roared at the rain, at the goats, at the moon itself, until the other animals went quiet whenever he came near. One dry evening his father, an old lion with a grey muzzle, took him down to the cracked riverbed and said nothing at all. Ansel waited for a word. Then a dust devil rose off the flats, and his voice went out of him like water from a split gourd, and he could not find a single sound to make.
He wandered until he came to a dry well, and in its black water he saw a thin, borrowed face that did not look like a king. From somewhere in the wind a voice said, "Remember who you are." Ansel asked who was speaking. The wind said it was the one who had carried him across the river when he was too small to stand. Ansel climbed the rock again before the sun came up, the dust still in his mane.
When the children asked Tomasz whether Ansel ever found his roar again, he stood and pushed the trolley towards the lift. "Every morning," he said, "and the goats still complain."
