Lipstick and Love script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A shaded lipstick tube sits vertically on the forearm, with a pink-red tip and a dark grey and black case showing soft highlights. Above it, pink script reads Love with three small pink hearts trailing toward the lipstick. The lettering is smooth and the shading is soft, set against plain skin on a light textured background.

The post boat came in on a Thursday, slapping against the pier at Skerra with the mail sacks and the smell of diesel, and you were the only one on the quay not watching the sacks. You were watching the boatman's hands for the brown paper parcel Ruth had promised since the spring, the one she always sent with three small hearts drawn in pencil down the side, like crumbs leading back to the house.

Inside was a lipstick and nothing else. The tube was heavy and cold, dark as wet slate, and when you twisted it the colour came up pink-red, the shade of the rhubarb under the kirk wall. A card was folded round it in her looping hand. For the dance. Don't make that face, it's only paint. Love, R.
The hall smelled of wet wool and paraffin that night, and the fiddles were out of tune. Donald Mackay asked you to dance twice, and the second time you let him lead you close enough that he could see what you had done to your mouth. He laughed and said it suited you, and for once you didn't argue. You kept the colour on until the lamps went out.
Walking home along the shore road, you pulled the tube from your coat pocket and held it up to the moon. The tip had worn down to a soft point from being carried all evening. Ruth had sent paint, as she said, but she had also sent the one thing she knew you would never buy for yourself, and you pressed the card flat against the sea wall and kept walking.
