Lipstick and heart on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A fully shaded lipstick with a red bullet and a grey and black case sits diagonally on the forearm. Above it, a loose red heart is drawn in a sketchy, single continuous line that fades at the ends. The shaded case uses soft greys and black, while the bright red of the lipstick and heart gives the piece its colour contrast against the skin.

The rain had come over the market at eleven and nobody had bothered to tighten the awnings. Dorothy Ashby kept her tray of secondhand lipsticks under a tarpaulin that sagged like a wet sail, and she counted them twice a morning because counting was the one thing the weather couldn't take from her.

A boy from the fish stall came over with a dare on his face. He wanted a red for his mother's birthday and had two pounds in coins gone warm from his fist. Dorothy pulled out a bullet of cherry red, its case scratched down to the silver, and wiped the tip on a tissue. "She'll want the one that doesn't come off on the cups," she said. He nodded as though he knew all about cups.
When he'd gone she found the heart. Someone had drawn it in the fog on the inside of her gazebo window, one unbroken line that thinned out wherever the breath ran dry. Red wax, she realised, pressed to the glass from the outside. Her mother had done that once, in a boarding house in Hull, the morning before she left for good. Dorothy had never told a soul, and the heart was not hers to explain.
By four the rain thinned to drizzle and the red lines were running down the glass in slow tears. She reached out and drew over it with her thumb, making it a little less certain, then stopped and left the rest alone. The lipstick was hers to sell. The heart was for whoever came back to look for it.
