The fuel stop at Cinder Wells opened at five, and by ten past, Maud Pennock had already decided the man in the blue cab was going to sleep through the lot if she let him. "Look alive, sunshine," she said. It was what her father had called her every morning at the bakery in Barstow when she was nine, and she had never heard it since without wanting to throw something. The driver lifted his head. He had a crease from the seat on one cheek and the bewildered look of a man who has been dreaming about a different road. He asked for black coffee and a Snickers, in that order, and paid in coins from the dashboard.

She watched him pull out east, the trailer swaying in the heat haze. Forty minutes later the radio crackled: a rig had jackknifed on the grade, nobody hurt, but the road was shut until noon. The blue cab was on the shoulder with its hazards blinking. The driver stood on the verge with his hands in his pockets, squinting at the sky as if it had let him down personally.

Maud took out the good mug, the one with the chip she never told anyone about, and held it across the barrier. "Told you," she said. He laughed, properly this time, and for once she didn't mind hearing her father's words come out of her own mouth. The sun was already up and hard as a coin, and nobody on that road was going anywhere for a while.
