Lotus and spiral on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a lotus flower drawn as a single thin outline, with its petals and centre bud rendered in open linework. Below it, a continuous line curls into a spiral, forming a stem-like flourish. The design is a single red ink on pale skin, centred on the ankle with plain background.

The bowline had jammed against the mooring post again, and you were kneeling on the wet planks with the river slapping at the hull, working the rope loose one stiff turn at a time. Behind you Dad was shouting about the tide, though he was the one who had tied it in the dark. Your fingers had gone numb. The wheelhouse lamp threw a yellow square across the water, and past it the lights of Chiswick slid by like coins dropped in a fountain.

The lotus on the cabin door had been there since before he bought the boat. Somebody had painted it in red oxide, only the outline, the petals open and the centre bud left bare, and the weather had worn it down to a dark thread. On long summer evenings, when the barge sat idle at Brentford, you used to trace it with a fingertip, following the curl of the stem round and round until it felt like a clock you could stop by touching it.

When the knot finally gave, the rope snaked over the gunwale and the barge swung out into the stream. Dad stopped shouting. You stood with the loose coil in your hands and understood that you could simply let it fall and let the boat go where the current wanted, the way the petals on the door seemed to open without asking anything of anyone.

You coiled the rope into the shape of that spiral, hung it on the hook beside the door, and the red line caught the lamplight one more time before the bow turned for home.
