Fine line lotus on a heel
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a single lotus flower drawn in thin black outline on the heel of a foot. The petals overlap in layered, symmetrical curves with a small centre where the lines meet. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits centrally on the skin against a soft, slightly warm skin tone, with a patterned bed sheet visible around the foot.

Brother Anselm had been told to draw the lotus three times before the prior would accept it. The first was too heavy, the second had petals lying flat on the water like cabbage leaves. Iron gall ink had dried into the ridges of his thumb, and out in the cloister the pond had been dry since midsummer, spoken of the way the brothers spoke of a dead uncle.

He worked at night by a single candle, because the scriptorium window faced the bell tower and the light there was poor. He let the nib run without lifting it, so each petal began where the last one ended. Outer petals first, then the inner ones curving up to meet at the middle, where the lines crossed and he had to stop, pen hovering, to decide where the crossing belonged. Brother Ruan, who kept the sluices, came in with mud on his sandals and watched over his shoulder.
"It looks like it is opening," Ruan said. "Or closing."
"It depends on the hour," said Anselm, and blotted the centre so the lines would not run.
The prior sent the sheet down to the market town with a letter about water rights. Nothing came of it that year. In autumn the rain came sideways off the moor and filled the pond to its lip in a single night, and by morning pale cups were breaking the surface, folded at their edges exactly as drawn. Anselm kept the original folded in quarters inside his breviary. Each spring, Ruan still pressed one finger to its centre before he opened the gate.
