Small outline heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn as a single black outline sits on the side of one finger of a hand held in front of a blurred background. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill inside the heart. Apart from the black ink, the only colour is the red nail polish on the fingertips.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every autumn the fiddler at the Lantern Hall in Scarrow Dale would not draw his bow until the boards had been marked. Nobody remembered who started it. A widow with chalk in her apron walked the floor on her knees and drew a line round every pair of feet that had come to dance, and where the lines met she drew a heart in one unbroken stroke, left hollow, because a heart in the hall was only ever a place to stand.

Ada Penhallow came up the hill that year with a bad knee and a borrowed coat. She had not come to dance. She sat by the stove and watched the chalk go round, and she saw that the widow drew every heart empty, and asked her why.

"Because a full heart gets crowded," the widow said. "Leave it open and somebody can always step in."

Ada laughed at that, then stopped laughing when Tam began to play and the lines filled with people who had not spoken to each other in years. By midnight a miller's son had found the heart by the door and stood inside it, grinning like a fool, and when the music broke he did not step out.

Ada took the chalk from the apron while the widow dozed. She drew one more heart beside the stove, a little crooked, and sat down inside it to wait for the next tune.
