Love script and heart on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a finger with the word Love written in flowing black script, followed by three small dots and a tiny heart. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The finger runs diagonally across the frame against a light, soft bedsheet, with a hand with pink painted nails visible at the edge.

Nineteen to the minute. Mrs Pryce from the cottages says the boats are all in early, which is more than I can say for the post.

I found your letter in the biscuit tin under the stairs, the one you wrote the week before the storm and never posted, because you said you would tell me the rest in person. It stops halfway down the page. You had got as far as the word Love and then the pen must have lifted, because there are three dots after it and a small heart pressed so hard into the paper that it has nearly torn through. I have read that line so many times the fold has gone soft as cloth.
The relief keeper at the Ness asked whether I mean to stay on the rock through the winter. I told him I would stay until the sentence is finished. He laughed, kindly enough, and said sentences do not finish themselves. Perhaps not. But I have started my reply, and I am not going to close it with a full stop either.
I have left the lamp trimmed and the wick dry. If you come round the point in the grey before morning, look for the window with the blue shutter. I will be the one with the lantern held high, waiting for you to tell me what came after the dots.
