Black script lettering reading Love Wins on the inner wrist, with a small rainbow heart in place of the o in Love.

Love Wins script with rainbow heart on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Close photograph of the inner wrist showing the words Love Wins in black, flowing script lettering. A small heart filled with rainbow stripes replaces the o in Love, and it is the only colour in the design. The lettering sits centrally on the skin against a plain, pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

My father said the madder would not take on a wet day, so we waited under the portico while the rain came sideways off the hills. Lysandra stood beside me with her arms folded, pretending the cold did not bother her. Her father and mine had not spoken since spring, when the lower channel flooded and each blamed the other's sluice gate.

The trouble was the wool. Lysandra's family wove the bands the magistrates wore at the festival, and they had asked my father to dye them in the old order: red, saffron, green, blue, violet. He said he would do it only if they paid in advance and returned the vat he had lent them. They refused. So Lysandra came to me, because I could letter a sign straight enough for the harbour master, and she asked me to paint a truce above the dye-house door. We argued all afternoon about the wording.

She wanted something dignified. I wanted something that would make both fathers read it twice. In the end we wrote only two words, Love wins, and I drew a small heart in the middle, striped with every colour we had, because the bands would be dipped in that same order and nobody could claim the heart as theirs alone. When my father came back from the wharf and saw it, he stood in the rain for a long time, dripping onto his own boots.

He did not speak. He went inside, lifted the lent vat from its hook, and set it down between Lysandra and me without a word. By evening the red was in the water, and the wool ran through it like a pulled thread, and the heart above us was already drying bright in the grey light.
