A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Scarrow Point went dark on the third winter after the Pellow boy failed to come home, and by February the herring boats had stopped trusting the coast. Mrs Tregenna, who kept the boarding house at the foot of the cliff, said the lamp had not gone out for want of oil. She said it had lost its nerve, the way a horse does on an ice road.

The tinker who lodged in room four that spring had a satchel full of inks and a way of talking to things. On the last night of the month he took Mrs Tregenna's left hand in his cold fingers, uncapped a pen, and wrote a word across the back of it in small, pointed letters. It did not show. "You will only see it in the dark," he said, "and only if you mean it." Then he went down the lane and was not seen again.

She climbed the tower at midnight with the hand held out before her like a bell-ringer's rope. The stairs were black and wet. At the top the lamp was cold glass and a dead wick, and she felt foolish, and then she said the word aloud, which she had never done in her life.

Under the glass the ink lit up blue, the shape of the word and a little spiked star above its last letter, bright enough to throw her shadow onto the wall. The lamp caught with a soft sound like a breath let out. Out on the water a boat turned for home.

Every spring after that she redrew the letters from the tinker's leftover ink, and nobody on the coast ever asked her why her hand glowed when the fog came in.
