A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The potter Oswy had kept two beads in a clay bowl on her sill since the winter the river came over the lower field. One was the colour of a fox in autumn, dull red shading to orange at the rim. The other was as blue as a jay's back, with a small pale triangle set into its heart like a splinter of sky. Nobody in Hallow Fen could say who had made them, only that a traveller had left them in the kiln-house one night and did not stay for bread.

When the reeve's son came asking for a bride-price in glazed pots, Oswy told him the beads were the making of any vessel worth having. "What are they made of?" the boy asked, leaning over the sill to look. Oswy turned the fox bead in her palm. "Of love," she said, "which is to say, of the hands that held the clay before the fire got it."

He did not believe her. That afternoon he took the blue bead down to the ford to prove her a liar, and dropped it into the brown water to see whether it would float. It did not. He laughed, and the current took the sound of his laughing with it. Oswy waded in to her knees at dusk, feeling through the silt with bare feet until her toes found a small hard coolness. She carried it home in her closed hand like a bird.

That night she set both beads side by side on the sill, and the wet blue one shone brighter than it had ever shone. The next morning the boy came back with the broken half of his bowl and asked her to show him how to hold clay. Oswy pressed the blue bead into the soft base of a new pot, triangle facing up, and left it in the sun to dry.
