The lambing shed smells of iodine and wet straw, and the snow has come in sideways again, so you pull the door shut with your hip and count the ewes by lantern light. Gran's hazel crook leans by the water trough where it always leans. Nobody in the valley calls it magic when a lamb comes backwards, but Gran did, every time, under her breath, as if the word were a bolt she could slide across the weather.

The mark she chalked on the lintel that first winter was a triangle with a ring inside it and a single line running down through the ring. She said it stood for three things a person could carry: a cloak that hides you, a stone that brings back what you have lost, and a stick that makes things answer. At nine you thought it was showing off, the same way she named every ewe after a king.

Tonight the ewe in the far pen is down and straining, and one foreleg is there while the head is turned wrong. The cold has got into everything. You kneel in the straw and do it the slow way she taught you, easing and waiting, turning the small skull gently until the lamb slithers out grey and silent. You rub it with sacking. Nothing happens. Then it sneezes.

You sit back against the hurdle and laugh until your eyes sting. Gran's flint is in your coat pocket, a stone with a hole worn through its middle, and you turn it over in your fingers while the snow fills the tracks you made coming in. In the corner the new lamb finds its feet. You take the stub of chalk from its nail and draw a ring beside the old triangle, a little crooked, and leave the line for next winter.
