Where's Waldo face behind the ear

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the head of the Where's Waldo character, with round glasses, a red and white striped bobble hat and a smiling face, drawn in black outline. Red and white fill the hat and a striped element below the ear, with a little brown for the hair. The design sits behind the ear on the head, and the photograph is a close, side-on view that shows the ear and some hair.

Every Thursday the night crossing fills up with school parties, and every Thursday somebody goes missing between the buffet and the toilets. Last week it was a boy called Kieran, nine years old, who had been pestering me for crisps. When I turned from the soup pans he was gone, and the galley door was swinging on its hinge.

I searched with a torch and a tea towel over my shoulder. Deck four, the cinema, the gift shop with its shelves of mugs printed with lighthouses. Every stripy jumper I passed made my heart jump, and every one was the wrong size or the wrong face. Eventually I checked the walk-in fridge, which no child is allowed near, and found nothing but cheese wheels and a stack of empty crates.

Then a giggle came from behind the crates. On the shelf by the door sat the lost property box, and Kieran had pulled out the red and white bobble hat that nobody has claimed since the spring. He had jammed it down over his ears and folded himself small between the crates, round glasses from a cracker pushed up his nose, grinning like he'd won a prize.

I sat on an upturned crate and handed him a bread roll. "Nobody finds you unless you want them to," I said, and he nodded as if that was the rule of the whole boat. I still think about that when a stripy hat goes past the hatch. Somewhere behind the crates, someone is grinning.
