At twenty past three the A&E waiting room held nineteen people and one bag of satsumas, and Denise Okafor had been asked to find the grandfather who had wandered off somewhere between triage and the vending machine. Mr Ellery, ninety-one, pyjamas under a camel coat, had last been seen heading towards the chapel. Denise walked the corridors with her torch from the lost property drawer, scanning for anything that looked like a man.

She checked the stairwell, the sluice room, the ward kitchen where a student nurse was eating toast over a sink. Nobody. On the third floor a radiator clanked like someone knocking to be let in. Denise leaned on the rail and thought about her own dad, who used to play a game with her on long coach journeys: find the one person in the crowd wearing the striped hat. He always found him first, and always claimed the bloke had been there the whole time, just hiding in plain sight.

Then she saw the coat, half off a chair in the family room, and beneath it Mr Ellery asleep with his glasses pushed up into his hair. He had not gone to the chapel at all. He had simply sat down somewhere nobody thought to look, the way the striped fellow always did, folded between the lamp and the tea urn.

Denise woke him gently and handed back the satsumas he had left on the windowsill. "You're a hard man to find, Mr Ellery," she said. He beamed as if she had paid him a compliment, and she wrote "located, family room, 03:52" on the clipboard and went back down to the noise.
