A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The long-eared dog left the orchard towns with a lollipop on a string, because his grandmother had said the sea was salt and sugar was the only thing that could cross salt. By then the roads were grey glass and nobody remembered who had laid them. He walked for nine days and ate nothing but the sweet, which he kept wrapped in a red bow he had tied himself.

Where the old rail bridge had fallen into the river, he found a chick perched on a tyre rim, too small to fly and too proud to be carried. It had been listening to the teal creature that lived under the water, a great soft thing that sang in bubbles, and the chick would not leave until the song was answered. The dog sat down in the reeds, untied the lollipop and held it out until the chick had pecked it clean.

The river did not rise that night. Instead the teal creature came up the bank dripping and asked the dog what he wanted for the crossing. He said nothing, only that the chick should have the sweet first. The creature laughed, a sound that went down the valley like a bell with a crack in it, and built a raft from car doors and wire.

They crossed at dawn, the dog at the back with his bow faded in the sun and the chick riding on his head. On the far bank the lollipop stick lay in the grass, bare and white. The people of the new town say that is why nobody in that valley has ever thrown a stick away.
