Squirtle tattoo on the inner wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Squirtle sits upright in profile, with a blue head and body, a large orange-brown shell, a curled tail and small red eyes. The bold black outlines and soft shading give it a clean, illustrated look. The subject is placed on the inner wrist with space around it, and the skin is lit evenly against a dark background.

The vending machine on Ward 9 had taken my pound coin at ten past two, and I was on my knees beside it with a torch in my teeth when Priya came round the corner in a dressing gown printed with clouds. She was nine, had a cast from elbow to fingertips, and was holding a cardboard turtle she had cut out of a cereal box with the tongue-out concentration of someone defusing a bomb.

"That's Squirtle," she said, as if I might have doubted it. "He's a water type. He can get your money back."
"Can he now."
She propped him against the glass, blue head up, orange shell turned towards the crisps, and gave him a look of such certainty that I found myself reaching for the coin return to see what would happen. Nothing happened, of course. The machine only hummed. But Priya nodded as if a deal had been struck, went back to bed, and I sat on the lino listening to the lift doors open and close somewhere far off.
At half three the coin dropped out of the slot on its own, warm and bright, and rolled under my shoe. I never did decide whether it was the turtle or a fault in the mechanism. I put the coin in my pocket and bought a packet of ready salted for the night sister.
When I came round at dawn, Squirtle had been moved to the day room windowsill, where the first grey light caught his small red eyes and the car park below steamed in the frost. Priya had written DON'T BIN HIM on a strip of tape along his base. I didn't.
