Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two infinity symbols are shown on bare skin, one on the top of a foot and a smaller one on an ankle. Each loop is formed by small capital letters set along a fine curved line, with the letters rotated to follow the path. The tattoos are in black ink with no shading, against a wooden floor and a pale skin tone.

The message came through garbled for the third time, and Hettie Rowe wiped the brass key on her apron before she answered it. Across the moor, at the signal hut above the cove, her sister was sending the old cipher again, the one they had worked out at the kitchen table when they were nine and too clever for their own good. The letters ran in a circle, each one leaning into the next, so the message had no start and no finish. You picked a letter and followed the curve until you came back round to it.

Hettie picked the D, as she always did, and tapped it out with the rhythm Joan had insisted on. A pause the length of a breath, then the J. The wind rattled the shutters and the lamp kept guttering, so she held the pencil flat against the pad to keep her hand still. The loop gave up its sense slowly. Mother has the boat. Come before the tide.

Halfway round the second curve the line hissed and went dead. Hettie sat with her fingers resting on the key, listening to nothing but the sea working at the rocks below. She thought about the cottage with its two chairs by the stove, and the last loop Joan had drawn for her on the back of a ration card, the ink smudged where a thumb had pressed it.

She waited until the lamp had been trimmed twice. Then the sounder clicked, faint as a fingernail on glass, and the letters came back in the same circle, beginning with the D she had sent. Joan had answered in the only language they had ever trusted, closing the loop so that neither of them had to be the first to let go.
