Matching arrow tattoos on two forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms show near-identical arrow tattoos in black ink, each with a thin shaft, small circular rings, and a feathered fletching at the tail. The linework is fine and crisp, with the shading kept to solid black detail rather than greys. Both arms are held over grey and blue geode stones against patterned textiles, and the composition is a close, top-down view.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Teodor had been told the grey nodules from the Ruddle quarry were worthless, which was why he kept bringing them home. Old Hanne the fletcher laughed when he set one on her bench, but she handed him the bronze wedge anyway. He struck it once, twice, and the rock opened along a seam he had not seen. Inside, a hollow lined with blue crystal caught the lamplight like the inside of a held breath.

Hanne took one half and he took the other. She said a split stone was a promise that two things had once been one, and that a fletcher should never waste a promise. So she cut shafts from the ash in the yard, bound feathers from the goose her son had shot, and carved two arrowheads from the rim of the geode itself, thin as a fingernail. Teodor fitted the crystal into each shaft's brass rings so that the light would travel down the wood when the bow was drawn.

The lord's archers came in spring to buy fletching for the border war. They took a hundred arrows and paid in silver. Only two were marked with blue rings, and those two went to the lord's own daughter, who had asked for the matching pair. Hanne watched the cart go down the valley and said nothing. That night Teodor found the wedge on the bench, still warm, and beside it the second half of the stone, split cleanly along its seam, waiting for someone to finish the cut.
