Matching infinity and heart ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on a wooden floor, one with green painted toenails. Each ankle carries a thin, dark infinity symbol with a small heart at each loop, and script words sit beside the symbols, reading best on one foot and friends on the other. The linework is clean and single toned, and the photograph is taken close up with a warm, soft focus on the skin.

The tide table was the only thing Pru trusted to tell the truth, so when the Saltmere ferry was cancelled for the third week running, she sat with the log book open at Ivy's handwriting and waited for the kettle to boil. Every crossing had been signed in the same two hands for eleven years. Ivy wrote the time and the weather, Pru wrote the number of passengers, and at the foot of each page they drew the same looping sign, a figure of eight that ran into itself, with a small heart pinched into each curve.

They had started it on a wet October morning when the crossing was empty except for a spaniel and a man with a trombone case. Ivy said the log needed something that wasn't a number, and Pru said the boat needed something that wasn't a rule, so the loop went in, with the word best beside it on Ivy's side of the page and friends on Pru's. The harbour office only ever read the columns and never the margins, and nobody ever asked what it meant.
In the spring Ivy took a post in Leeds, sorting parcels in a depot with a view of a car park, and the crossings carried on without her. Pru rowed the south quay alone, calling the times across the water to the lad who kept the north side, and each morning she opened the log to a clean page and drew the loop first, one curve for each of them, before she wrote anything else.
The ferry went back into service in June. On the first crossing Pru found a new line in the log, written in Ivy's careful slant and dated the day before: Saltmere, fair, two passengers, one of them me. Underneath, the loop had been drawn again, and this time the heart at the far end had been coloured in with a biro that had run dry halfway through.
