Matching bird and heart wrist tattoos
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side with matching designs: a black silhouette of a bird in flight on each, joined by a single thin line that loops into a small heart. The left line is red and the right is blue, while the birds are solid black. The fine line work is crisp against pale skin, and the dark background frames the two arms in the centre of the photo.

The frost had already silvered the towpath when Maud tied the red wool to the first bird's leg. Edie, on the far bank of the cut, folded her arms and said birds did not carry letters, and that Maud had been reading too much by the stove. Still she tied the blue wool to the second bird, a black thing with a torn wing, and let it go.

The birds went up over the frozen water and turned in the same slow loop they had made every winter since their father drowned at the lower lock. When they came down on opposite sides, the wools ran taut between them and met in the middle of the cut. Maud pulled. Edie pulled. Neither would be the one to let go, so for six weeks the line sagged over the ice like washing nobody would take in, and the sisters spoke only through the birds.
In February the thaw came early and the ice broke up in grey plates. Maud found the red wool knotted round the blue at the centre of the line, tied in a small loop that would not undo, with a heart pulled tight through it. Edie had not tied it. That evening Maud went out to the bank with a lantern and found her sister already there, holding the other end of the same thread.
Neither of them mentioned the knot. By April the birds were back in the reeds, and the wools hung between the banks, red on one side and blue on the other, and nobody on the towpath ever cut them down.
