The second parcel for Fenwick went out this morning with its cord tied the way you showed me, the loops drawn so tight the knot looks sewn. I have started to think of the bows as our letters to one another, since the abbot will not let us write more than one page a season. Yours arrived with a length of twisted hemp wound twice round the spine, and I have been staring at it all week because it looks just like the bell rope in the cloister.

Here is the trouble. Prior Osric found the spare reel of cord in the scriptorium and says it belongs to the sacristy. I told him it was for binding, which is true, though I also used it to mend the two halves of the psalter I dropped last Lent. He did not laugh. He took the reel, then came back an hour later with a length of the same cord and asked me to tie a bow in it, which I did very badly, because my hands were shaking and he was watching the window instead of me.

I keep the second bow tucked in my sleeve. When the bell rings for vespers I pull the cuff back and look at the loops, and they are the only neat thing I have made since Michaelmas. Send me one of yours in return, even a scrap. I will bind it into the back of the next copy of Bede, and nobody will think to look there.
