Matching buck symbol tattoos on forearms
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms each carry a bold black outlined buck head symbol with antler shapes at the top. The left symbol is filled with blue and purple shading that has a glittery sheen, while the right is filled with pink and magenta shading and has the word love in cursive script below. The two tattoos sit side by side in a close vertical composition against plain skin.

The ferryman at Hollin Ford had been told the two bucks were brothers, but he had watched them come down to drink at dusk for three winters and knew better. The older one wore the colour of a bruise going cold, blue with a frost that caught the moon. The younger one burned the colour of rhubarb jam whenever the sun dropped behind the fells.

They had been born on the same night in the bracken above the weir, or so the story went, one to a ewe and one to a hind who had strayed from the high pasture. Nobody could say which had come first. When the flood took the old oak footbridge, the parish salvaged its trunk and had it carved into a crown of antlers, then sawn down the middle so each bank could keep a half. The blue half went to the north side and the pink half to the south. Agnes Pell, the widow who did the carving, scratched one word beneath the pink half because she was tired of arguing with the vicar about whether it counted as a sign or a sermon.
Every evening after that, the two bucks walked down to the water, stood either side of the ford, and lowered their heads until their tines almost touched above the current. The ferryman rowed between them with his lantern and never once saw either of them cross.
Then came the spring the river rose over the stepping stones. He took the boat over at first light to fetch Agnes's ledger and found both halves of the sign lying together on the mud below the mill wall, their cut edges fitted like two hands folded shut. The word beneath the pink half had been worn smooth by the water, and nobody in Hollin Ford ever tried to read it again.
