Matching C and fraction wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest together, showing a matching pair of tattoos on the inner forearms near the wrists. Each design is a thin black outline of a large letter C with a small superscript marking and a fraction, one reading 1/2 and the other 2/2. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the photograph is black and white, with a dark background at the top right.

The rain found the gap between the awning and the fishmonger's board by seven, so Nan and I stood under the lip of her old tin sign and passed one umbrella back and forth like a relay baton. The locksmith came on Tuesday, a quiet man with a leather roll of picks, and opened the drawer under the till that had been stuck since the Coronation. Inside were two ledgers, each labelled in her looping hand. The first read Lot C, No. 1 of 2 and ran from 1961 to 1979. The second read Lot C, No. 2 of 2 and carried the rest of it: pencilled prices, a few crossed out, and on the back of one invoice a sketch of a swan that had clearly been drawn while she waited for the kettle.

I read the second ledger in the rain while the market shut around us. The last entry was dated the week before she went into hospital. Sell the clocks to whoever stops and listens. Give the keys to whoever asks. So I did. A woman with a pushchair stopped at the cabinet and asked what the smallest key opened, and I had no idea, so we tried it on the cabinet door. It turned, and something inside gave a small bright click, like a page being turned over.
